As a resident of California except for 4 years of 53, I can validate the perception of over consumption of many of the residents of this state. I grew up in the S.F. Bay Area (south, north and east bay), then migrated to So. Ca. in the '70s. Lived 17 years in Palm Springs area and in Huntington Beach (O.C.) before moving to Hawaii for 3 years and then moving back to inland No. Calif. Ok, I haven't seen it all, but I've seen enough to make me puke! Hey, it's still almost as bad, there is an incredible display of self entitlement and not 'keeping up with the Jones'es" but damn well better out do them! BK (bankruptcy) is a socially acceptable way to get house credit from the Pit Boss to enable a few more hands at the table to be able to redeem yourself and be a "come back kid". I was able to watch this overindulgence and enjoy the show without becoming part of it. Through the years, my wife and I maintained a modest lifestyle while working secure, ho-hum jobs at telcom companies in So. Calif. It was great to live in H.B. in the '80s and stash a few $ for our dream move to Hawaii and a rural lifestyle. We got to watch the excesses and not have to pay the prices of insane RV's, ski boats, cabins at Arrowhead, etc. that friends just had to have even if it stretched their budget unrealistically. The O.C. economy was on a major roll and it really was like heresy to deny it. When the "Tech Wreck" hit, things softened, and we lost half our 401k's value, but being relatively young, we could shrug it off with our tiny home in rural Hawaii being paid off. We've benefitted from our watching our pennies in so many ways, wouldn't have done anything differently and still love California. Outsiders, please read and believe all the bad press you here about this state, it's sheer hell, stay away!
